Holy Thursday: Leadership That Kneels

Leadership Lessons for Catholic Leaders
For bishops, priests, deacons and all in leadership, Holy Thursday challenges status, comfort, and clericalism. Jesus models leadership as self-emptying love—kenosis—washing away pride, division, and neglect of the marginalized. He commands: “Love one another as I have loved you” (Jn 13:34), a love proven in Eucharist and foot-washing, where the Master becomes servant.
Leaders renew priestly promises at the Chrism Mass, recommitting to fidelity, prayer, and service. The Eucharist sustains this mission: Christ’s Body broken and Blood poured out nourishes shepherds to feed the flock with mercy, unity, and joy.
In an age of scandals and polarization, Holy Thursday calls Catholic leaders to radical humility—serving the poor, forgiving offenders, defending the vulnerable, and fostering communion. By imitating Christ’s towel and basin, leaders become icons of the Good Shepherd, leading not by domination but by self-gift.
