Catholic Servant Leadership: Saint Hedwig and the Power of Generosity

Saint Hedwig: Generosity and Service to the Poor

Saint Hedwig, Duchess of Silesia (1174–1243), exemplifies care for the poor and generosity as a call to radical self-giving for Catholic leaders.

Married to Duke Henry I, she used her royal influence to found hospitals, leper colonies, and monasteries, providing shelter and aid to the destitute amid medieval hardships. Hedwig lived simply, selling jewels and garments to feed the hungry, and personally served the sick, washing their feet in humility. Her generosity extended to orphans and pilgrims, reflecting Christ’s preferential option for the poor.

Leadership Lessons for Catholic Leaders
