Prophet Elisha: Answering the Call Completely
A Catholic leader can draw powerful lessons from the Prophet Elisha (c. 910–800 BC), successor to Elijah, “man of God,” and miracle-worker venerated as a saint especially in Eastern Catholic and Carmelite traditions (feast June 14).
Leadership Lessons for Catholic Leaders
Radical obedience and detachment: While plowing with twelve yoke of oxen, Elisha received Elijah’s mantle, slaughtered his animals, burned his plows, and followed without hesitation—leaving wealth and security behind. Leaders learn decisive response to God’s call, burning bridges to the old life to embrace prophetic mission fully.
Humble service and the “double portion”: Requesting a double share of Elijah’s spirit as firstborn successor, Elisha served faithfully before leading. His many miracles—healing Naaman, raising the dead, multiplying food, purifying waters—show God’s power working through compassionate, practical care for the poor, widows, and afflicted. Catholic leaders are called to servant leadership that multiplies grace for others.
Courageous fidelity amid opposition: For over 60 years, Elisha confronted corrupt kings, false worship, and crises while guiding the “sons of the prophets.” He modeled steadfast trust that God provides and protects His servants.
