Saint John the Baptist: He Must Increase
St. John the Baptist stands as one of the clearest biblical models of purposeful, humble, and courageous leadership. His entire life was ordered toward a single mission: to prepare the way for Jesus Christ and then step aside so that Christ could increase.
How He Followed and Fulfilled His Mission
From the womb (Luke 1:41) to his death, John lived with laser focus on the role God had given him. He preached repentance in the wilderness, baptized those who responded, and pointed everyone toward the One who was coming. When Jesus appeared, John publicly identified Him as “the Lamb of God” and declared, “He must increase, but I must decrease” (John 3:30). He completed his mission by bearing faithful witness even when it cost him his freedom and his life.
Leadership Lessons for Catholic Leaders
Clarity of purpose: John never confused his role with the Messiah’s. Leaders must know the specific mission entrusted to them and refuse to make themselves the center.
Radical humility: At the height of his popularity, when crowds flocked to him, John insisted he was not worthy to untie Jesus’ sandals. True leadership rejoices when others surpass us and when the mission, not the messenger, receives the glory.
Courageous truth-telling: He confronted sin—whether among ordinary people, tax collectors, soldiers, or King Herod—without softening the message. Leadership that serves God cannot compromise on truth for the sake of approval or safety.
Life consistent with the message: John’s austere life in the desert authenticated his call to repentance. His example teaches that credibility flows from personal integrity and self-denial.
Willingness to decrease: The ultimate test of leadership is the ability to hand over influence, attention, and success so that Christ (or the greater good of the mission) may grow.
