Saint John Eudes: Forming Shepherds’ Hearts

St. John Eudes (1601–1680) offers Catholic leaders a model of pastoral zeal, priestly formation, and heartfelt devotion centered on the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

A gifted preacher who conducted over a hundred parish missions, Eudes saw the urgent need for spiritual renewal among both clergy and laity in 17th-century France. He responded by founding the Congregation of Jesus and Mary (the Eudists) specifically to form holy priests through seminaries, and the Order of Our Lady of Charity to care for women in need. Leaders learn from him the importance of investing in the solid formation of those who will serve others—especially future priests—so that the Church has authentic shepherds after the Heart of Christ.

Leadership Lessons for Catholic Leaders

His leadership combined bold initiative with deep interior life. He voluntarily cared for plague victims, preached tirelessly, and promoted devotion to the Hearts of Jesus and Mary as the source of true transformation. He taught that a priest (and by extension any Christian leader) must be “another Christ,” giving mind, heart, time, and strength for the salvation of souls.

Eudes emphasized that holiness is not reserved for extraordinary moments but is lived by sanctifying ordinary daily actions in union with Christ. For leaders this means integrating prayer, work, and service so that every responsibility becomes an expression of love.

Reflection Questions & Personal Application
